Lille secured a narrow 1-0 victory over local rivals Lens in the 125th edition of the Derby du Nord, with substitute Olivier Giroud scoring the decisive goal in the closing stages. The result came after a fiercely contested encounter in which Lille created the majority of the opportunities but had to wait until the final four minutes to find the breakthrough.
Lille dominates Derby du Nord against Lens
The derby was played at an intense pace despite the absence of away supporters. Both teams showed plenty of physicality and were involved in several heavy challenges, with Lille suffering more in the opening stages. Ethan Mbappé appeared uncomfortable after Michaël Cuisance stepped on his foot, although the winger was able to continue.
Mbappé soon threatened the Lens goal with a curling attempt that narrowly missed the target, although goalkeeper Robin Risser appeared to have the situation under control. It proved to be an indication of how the first half would develop, as Lille enjoyed more possession and created the better chances.
Soriba Diaoune came particularly close to opening the scoring on two occasions. First, his header following a well-weighted lob from Nabil Bentaleb was stopped by Risser. He then saw another powerful effort from inside the penalty area take a deflection and crash against the crossbar.
Lens offered less attacking threat but still managed to create a dangerous opportunity on the counterattack. Saud Abdulhamid combined with Florian Thauvin before attempting a shot, but Berke Özer made the save with his knee to keep the score level.
Olivier Giroud delivers late winner for Lille
Lille continued to control proceedings after the interval, with Mbappé remaining a constant threat in the final third. The teenager tested Risser several times with efforts from distance, but one of the most dangerous moments involving him came at the opposite end of the pitch.
A misunderstanding between Mbappé and Maxima Goffi allowed Thauvin to break through on goal. However, an uncharacteristically poor first touch from the 2018 World Cup winner gave Özer enough time to rush off his line and deny the Lens captain.
As the match progressed, it became increasingly clear that a single goal could decide the Derby du Nord. Both teams began making more mistakes as fatigue set in, causing the game to open up during the closing stages.
The decisive moment arrived with just four minutes remaining. Bentaleb unleashed a long-range effort that Risser could only parry, allowing substitute Olivier Giroud to react quickest and turn the rebound into the net. His late finish secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory for Lille in the 125th edition of the derby.
